Basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics are necessary, but they aren't enough to

prepare students to participate effectively in a world that demands independent and

cooperative problem solving skills to address social, economic, ethical and personal issues. In today's world, students need to become more globally aware. They need to understand and appreciate history, culture and community.

Teaching Social Studies will:

  • Equip students with knowledge and understanding of the past in order for them to cope with the present and plan for the future.

  • Enable students to understand and participate effectively in their world.

  • Help students acknowledge different points of view and explain their relationship to other people.

  • Provide students with skills for productive problem solving and decision making.

  • Provide students with a global perspective of world issues. and current events

  • Provide students with a greater understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity and environmental issues.

  • Provide students with skills for critical thinking and making thoughtful value judgments.

  • Help students integrate these skills to become a responsible citizen whether it's in their play group, the school, the community or the world.
